Short History Of The Internet

By Jack Wogan

Internet looks so big and complete that we can hardly imagine how it was invented and how it evolved further on. In fact, Internet has a short history, spanning from the 60s to our days, but its evolution was so fast that today it became indispensable. The proof is that we often feel, when away from the Internet for a few days, that we have been isolated from the rest of the world. Whether we use it to do business, to communicate with people from far away places or to entertain ourselves, we cannot live without Internet. So what's its history?

But how did it all begin? The military and scientific fields were the first who allowed the invention and development of Internet. The father of Internet is considered to be J.C.R. Licklide, a computer scientist who put the basis of the first global network of computers in 1962. From it evolved in 1969, with the help of sustained work of numerous scientists, ARPANET, the first operational packet switching network in the world. What does that mean? The breakthrough was that with packet switching, a data system could use one communications link to communicate with several machines, by collecting data and transmitting them as packets onto the attached network link.

TCP is a concept firstly used in 1974. It literally means Transmission Control Protocol and it meant that two networks using TCP/IP protocol could be linked, thus creating internet. in 1976 it was conceived and studied, but it was actually used in 1982, when the definition of what internet should be was beginning to get a shape. Unix is another thing you'll hear about when Internet is involved and its creation was as important. In 1969, computer scientists devised an operating system (Unix) which, besides being an influence for Linux, is the most popular operating systems in today's web servers and web hosting services.

Most of the research was done in the US, but around 1972 things began to change in Europe as well. Thus, France and the UK developed their own Arpanet-like networks, which made possible the first international connection between two computers, in 1973. It happened between the US and the UK. This is also the time when email is growing in popularity, after its discovery in 1971. Each account is stored on a server, and that is why Internet is such a big industry and business. 1979 is the year when the multiuser sites appear, with adventure and board games.

The final blow was given in 1991, when Internet was conquered. It was the putting in place of the WWW (world wide web) that gives us Internet as we know it today. It was thus much easier to access any sort of information in the world within the shortest time. It was certainly a revolution in the types of means of communication and it gives the fast pace of our lives today. Internet is an admirable work of thousands of scientists which makes our lives easier and is of great help in any domain of our lives.
