What Are Some Common Network Tools

By Harry Malvarn

Network tools are very important especially for systems administrators and network engineers. They use these in order to monitor the flow of traffic going to and from the internet as well as the local intranet. Without these, one cannot possibly troubleshoot networks efficiently.

Every tool has its own use and one should know specifically when to use each. One tool that is commonly used is the packet sniffer. It can also go by the name packet analyzer or protocol analyzer. Its main purpose is to intercept packets sent from device to device and read the contents. These can also be found in either hardware or software form.

Another tool that is necessary is the port scanner. It will list the state of all the ports on the device it is attached to. As a security measure, this is used on every device in order to detect any ports that were unintentionally opened. A single port left unmanaged could very well be the break a hacker needs.

Cable testers are used when connectivity issues arise. A problem with connectivity is of the highest level as operation and communication is instantly ceased. This should be dealt with immediately.

In order to verify if the cable is still working, both ends are attached to the tester. LEDs will then light up in order to show complete circuits. If a short-circuit or open-circuit occurs, one can easily tell by looking at the LEDs.

Another tool that a systems admin needs is a certifier. This also deals with cables but in a different light. It is able to tell if the cable capacity is correct. This is usually used when there is an active connection but it experiences severe latency. Latency is when there is a delay in the transmission of data. This is usually evident in wireless networks and is uncommon in local intranets. When this happens in your intranet, a certifier might be needed.

Knowing when to use each tool is a great plus. One can easily solve network problems in their homes and offices. This is a great skill to have as one can never predict when a problem arises and a technician is not available. Being able to troubleshoot the problem will greatly impress your co-workers and bosses and might help you advance the employment ladder.
