The Disadvantages Of Rolling Out Cloud Hosts

By Carroll Mcintosh

While it may seem that cloud computing is the way of the future, the cloud software does have a ways to go before it will really be able to meet the promise it belies. Many are eager to jump on board the cloud and begin running their networks using a cloud engine, but you might want to be forewarned of the inherent disadvantages that come along with this new web hosting solution.

Cloud engine software runs into trouble when trying to run multiple applications at a time, which is a big disadvantage to cloud computing. While there are software solutions available, such as Hypervisor, that make running multiple processes on the cloud less of a bother, the dedicated server still handles these functions with far more ease. The ability to run multiple processes simultaneously, without issues, is a vital necessity for a large business.

While the introduction of the cloud control panel add on has reduced complaints about the difficulty of navigating the cloud, these are additions that do not come with your product, dedicated servers, on the other hand, provide a lot of these functionalities and automated day to day process running with ease.

The biggest disadvantage and inherent flaw in the cloud is that they are primarily unmanaged. For this reason, you either have the choice of hiring an experienced profession to handle all the complexities of your cloud, or you must purchase add-ons such as a cloud management engine, and manage the system yourself. Adding to the overall price, bit by bit, these add-ons do reduce the cost effectiveness that is often touted as the major advantage of the cloud versus the dedicated server.

Though in counterargument to the complaints of lack of management, there are many firms now that specialize in providing services that help businesses manage their cloud, at affordable prices. The purchase of "cloud space" through a cloud hosting reseller even often includes support for technical issues and management troubles that will help you find your way.

A common complaint about cloud computing is the lack of privacy and security functions that are part of almost all dedicated server packages. While not up to the same level of functionality and reliability of the dedicated server, a cloud VPS, or Virtual Private Server is seeking to fill that void.

While the cloud solution does hold a lot of promise for the future, there are still a good many areas where it simply cannot compete with the standard dedicated server. Cloud computing has a long way to go before it will be embraced by the masses as they are currently well know for a lack of reliability, security, and functionality. There are steps and efforts being made to address the inherent flaws in cloud software, but many of these enhancements and improvements cost additional money, adding to the overall cost of running the cloud, sometimes rendering it both less useful and cost effective than a dedicated server.
