Improving your Servers' Security

By Kevin Abrahams

Most of the webmasters or clients usually their main concern when selecting a web hosting service provider is the Server Security. Actually, some web-hosting packages are not reliable to use because security measures is not really their main concern.

Here usually when you are about to use a shared hosting account, you are being required to share your managed server and even your other resources that is why your computer may be at risk. However, in order to circumvent the hacking or intruder attacks you need to have this type of security measures. Therefore, it can only be prevented by following this various security measures. First, by changing your passwords.

Limit number of personnel with access to the administrator unless their jobs require them. Record all user activities and maintain such record in an encrypted form on the web server or store them in a separate machine. Monitor system records regularly and check for any suspicious activity. Install some traps to anticipate for possible attacks on the server. Create macros that will run hourly to check reliability of passwords.

In changing your password, you need to make it very complex by using alphabets and even numbers it really depends on you whether it would be in a very few characters in upper or lower case. Through this, it will find very arduous to those hackers or intruders to speculate.

Transfer these updates to the public server through an SSL connection. Doing this hourly can avoid having corrupted server to be exposed for a long time.

It is also important to backup your data. Having backups ensure that you can recover your data once the worst thing happens. Make sure that you always routinely backup your files and keep copies in a safe location preferably offsite to protect them against theft or unexpected circumstances such as fire and flood. Having a backup of your important files can help you easily retrieve important data if the need arises.

Also to protect your server's security, people who have access to the most critical data should be limited. Regardless of the position one employee has, he does not need to have access in everything if it is not related to his job. This limits the exposure of your website when a user messes up some critical data. Access rights may be maintained by isolating critical resources from the rest of the network by using a subnet or by having a secondary server in another location. This can be one of the most effective ways to protect your website against hackers.

There is a possibility of losing your very important data or files just because of wrong demand. So make sure that should take a regular backup of all your data or files even on weekly or monthly basis. Through this, your important files or data are really secured by this kind of procedure.

Therefore, even all these security measure is not enough to really take care of your manage server, still your device should have taken a regular maintenance.
