VoIP Technology Continues To Change The World

By Jason D. Penaz

Changes in technology have presented computers with many new options for communication, including new systems that incorporate Voice over Internet Protocol, otherwise known as VoIP. This system in particular has attracted much interest in recent years. IN order to fully understand why this is so, people need to understand the nature of the technology and its ability to meet customer's evolving expectations.

The technology made easy

Voice over Internet technology is really quite simple to understand. Basically, it is a technology that allows users to place calls anywhere in the world by using existing internet connections. These calls can be made from one's personal computer, cell phone, or other mobile wireless devices. The technology itself has been in existence for many years, but its use was limited due to the rarity of high speed access.

With the move toward broadband connections, however, these calling systems are now gaining new attention as an easy way to manage any phone system. Calls are made using a variety of hardware platforms, including computer microphones and speakers, phones connected directly to the Ethernet and mobile phone applications. These systems all meet three common user needs.

Lower cost structures

The most important benefit is the lower costs associated with these calls. Subscriber-based services generally offer far lower rates than the phone companies. Even better are the free services such as Skype that enable consumers to call other Skype users at no charge.

Bringing it all together

Customers want integration of technology. These systems provide that integration and do so in a way familiar to computer users. In addition, the technology allows every type of communication to be bundled together in one place, thus reducing the need for multiple devices.

A full range of features

Consumers always want to be dazzled with features. Many have been awaiting such features as video-calling and simplified chat platforms. Many of the new VoIP platforms provide these features in simple to use programs, while also enabling their users to take advantage of older benefits like call waiting, call forwarding, and recording.

The one thing that must be recognized is that these new technologies have already changed the way people view their communications devices. Future improvements in the underlying technologies and delivery systems will surely increase their usage and make traditional land lines even less attractive. Consumers who become familiar with new VoIP systems now will find it easier to keep pace with these changes later.
